Indian Air Force Grounds HAL Tejas Jets After Crash

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has grounded its fleet of single-seat Tejas fighter jets following a crash earlier this month that left one aircraft severely damaged during landing.

According to officials, the Tejas jet was returning from a routine sortie when it encountered difficulties while landing. The aircraft sustained extensive damage on impact. The pilot, however, ejected safely and is reported to be unharmed.

Fleet Grounded for Technical Probe

In the aftermath of the incident, the IAF has grounded approximately 30 single-seat Tejas aircraft to conduct a comprehensive technical inspection and safety review. The move is aimed at identifying the cause of the accident and preventing similar occurrences.

An official investigation is currently underway, with technical teams examining flight data, maintenance records, and mechanical systems.

Safety and Operational Impact

Grounding the fleet temporarily impacts operational deployment and training schedules. However, defence sources indicated that safety remains the top priority, and the aircraft will only return to service once cleared by investigators.

The Tejas, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is India’s indigenously built light combat aircraft designed to replace aging fighter jets in the IAF fleet.

Background on Tejas Program

The Tejas program represents a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Over the years, the aircraft has undergone multiple upgrades and has been inducted into operational squadrons of the Air Force.

Further details are expected once the investigation report is released.
